On a sad note, it does not surprise me anymore to read a Champion Modular Home buyer's description of their experience with their new home. Nor am I surprised that after their nightmare home is delivered, that Champion Modular Homes is slow to respond with regards to the customer service requests. The "well this one is better than most" response is of little consolation to the buyer who has laid out a lot of money to make the purchase.
Although I am jumping slightly ahead in my anticipation of how Champion Modular Homes will respond to the following comment from Gary Perry, I do so based on history, which seems to be a very good indicator of what to expect from Champion Modular Homes.
"It appears that Champion has similar problems on the East Coast. We recently purchased a Champion Summit model 581 modular home built by Champion's Lillington NC plant. It is an example of Champion's poor quality workmanship and lack of quality control. They installed the wrong hall bath. Front door as well as patio door not properly fitted to frame and would not close and and latch. Cabinet drawers that didn't fit or close properly. Frame securing the in cabinet microwave not secured at factory. Screws through cabinets that didn't fasten to anything and were simply left in place. We are not even in the house yet as on-site preparation is still underway. I can only hope that once power and plumbing are hooked up that we don't continue to find other items. Champion may call this a modular home, but the materials used are no better than some medium grade doublewides, just bigger board sizes to qualify for off frame modular and a higher price! If you're looking for a modular home stay away from Champion. Take a close look at the HBS or Commodores with respect to the quality of their cabinet work and other features. Champion should take some lessons from those two manufacturers!"
For all of you who are considering a modular home, please, please take Gary's comment into consideration, especially the sentence "If you are looking for a modular home stay way from Champion."

Thanks for the post. It is too bad to hear that Champion homes are screwing up so much. Modular homes are such a great option for many people. Reply to this

We purchased a palm harbor modular home which has turned into a nightmare with the foundation and installation. What type of attorney should we look for? Not very many people seem to be up to speed with modular homes. Any suggestions? Reply to this

I have recently discovered that I thought I was buying a Genesis but I was given a Redman home. Has anyone else run into this? Has anyone heard of this type of sales approach? If you bought a Genesis, does it have a label anywhere on the home saying it is a Genesis? I would really appreciate any assistance anyone could lend. Thanks, Reply to this

Our Champion modular problems continue. Some of you have read my earlier posting about our Champion modular produced at the Lillington, NC plant. Since moving in we've discovered more examples of Champion's poor workmanship. The masterbath tub faucet doesn't work and you can't access it without taking the tile off the tub. The kitchen sink drain leaks. The utility room sink drain was not connected. The kitchen range hood light wouldn't work. When I checked behind it I found a hole in the wall where the outlet was supposed to be installed. Instead they just ran the wire to the outlet and left it in the hole in the wall not attached. We paid for an Incom system througout the house for TV, phone and computer connections. The satellite crew came and found that the entire system wouldn't work and had to drill holes in our floor and run their own cable for us to have TV. Likewise the system is useless for phone, etc.. Master bedroom closet light works intermittently. We had four can lights installed in the kitchen. I put bulbs in them and the can assembly turns when you try and screw the bulb in. You have to use one hand and hold the assembly while you screw the bulb in. The circuit breaker box was not labeled correctly. (Nice to find out before you do any electrical work!) Bathroom sink drain pipe was not properly aligned so they just bent the sink pipe at an angle to make it fit into the drain pipe. The dealer tells us it will be several weeks minimum before Champion can get out to begin making corrections. Most likely because they're covered up trying to fix their mistakes on other homes. If I were a buyer looking for modular homes I would drive by, no I would speed by, and not stop at any dealer advertising Champion Homes!! Reply to this
